Just when we thought Taylor was getting over this crud, she got worse! On Tuesday night when I took her clothes off to give her a bath, I noticed little red bumps all over her chest and back. At first I thought her outfit may have irritated her skin that day. She woke up Wednesday and the rash was still there, much worse and had traveled down her arms, legs and face. We took her back to the pediatrician and she said it was probably one of two things.
Either she had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic (amoxil) which she started taking Monday night or she had a viral infection. The ped gave her benadryl and said if the rash went away that night then it was an allergic reaction and we would have to switch to another antibiotic. The rash got better but did not go away so we're still not sure if it was the antibiotic or not. To be on the safe side we switched to the new antibiotic.
We really think it was roseola, a viral infection.
A child with roseola typically develops a mild upper respiratory illness, followed by a high fever. The high fever often ends abruptly, and at about the same time a pinkish-red flat or raised rash appears on the child's trunk and spreads over the body. The rash's spots blanch (turn white) when you touch them and the rash usually spreads to the neck, face, arms, and legs.
These were the exact syptoms Taylor had. Since it was a viral infection, we just had to let it run its course. By Thursday the bumps had diminished signigicantly and by Friday they were gone. She's doing great now but still has a little cough.
This is what the rash looked like on Tuesday night before it got worse. Poor baby! Luckily, it did not itch and Taylor still acted like her happy self.
